Trailer Safety Inspection Before Shipping

A roadworthy trailer helps protect the public, the equipment and your schedule. Inspect early so there is time to correct a problem before pickup.

Pre-pickup safety checklist

Identification & specifications

Confirm VIN, ownership documents, overall dimensions, empty weight and any cargo. Photograph all sides before pickup.

Tires & wheels

Check tire age, pressure, tread, cracking, lug-nut torque, wheel damage and that a correctly sized spare is available.

Bearings, axles & suspension

Look for heat, play, leaks, worn springs, damaged hangers, bent axles and missing hardware. Service bearings if overdue.

Hitch & safety equipment

Inspect coupler or kingpin, landing gear, safety chains, breakaway cable, jack, pintle eye and hitch components.

Brakes & lights

Test running lights, brake lights, turn signals, reflectors, electric or air brakes, wiring plug and breakaway battery.

Body & securement

Close and lock doors, windows and hatches. Retract awnings and steps. Secure ramps, jacks, accessories and loose interior items.

Before pickup: disclose flat tires, inoperative brakes or lights, structural damage, missing paperwork, nonstandard hitch equipment and any cargo. Never conceal hazardous materials. The carrier makes the final roadworthiness and acceptance decision.
